Positioning the Right People in the Right Position
Do you have a difficulty to position the right people in the right position?
Try the following practice that I have used to develop employee career path and skill sets:
- Create a quadrant chart with XY coordinate axes.
- Select the two most important factors when you evaluate your candidates/employees (such as visibility, capability, loyalty, personality, work experience, interpersonal communication, salary, age, physical condition, and etc.)
- Set the X and Y axis in the chart with the selected factors.
- Identify the job category (Project Manager, Engineer, Sales, and etc.) for each quadrant.
- Place your candidates/employees in the chart.
- Create multiple quadrant charts with different factors for various comparison.
- Able to apply more than two factors by overlaying multiple charts.
- Have not tried yet, but it might be good to ask your employees to place other employees in the chart.
- Figure out which skill set development is needed.
- The shape of the distribution of dots tells how well your team workforce is balanced.
The shape of the distribution is described by its boundary of connecting the outside dots and its possession of symmetry, its tendency to skew, or its uniformity.
